If someone held out to you a gift certificate to Outback Steakhouse or TGI Friday’s or Red Lobster would you reach out and grab it? Of course you would. That is the way we are with most things and if we can get it for free so much the better. Well, some things are just not that easy to get. Some people expect great things out of their website and don’t understand that they need to put great things into it. The relationship between business owner and Website Designer is a partnership. The Web Designer is equipped to display and represent the thoughts and vision of the business which owns the website. Some people, however, think that the Web Designer can dream up all of the content of the website. We cannot do this with any degree of efficiency. We understand Web Design. We do not understand the workings of most other businesses. So the business owner cannot justly expect to glide into a great website without any real effort. As in most other things in life, a good website and good Search Engine positioning can only come after a significant amount of effort on the part of the business owner or Board of Directors.

Is your job important to you? Important enough to finish? For most of us, what we do determines what sort of income we achieve. By doing well we hope to bring in more money; more than yesterday.
When I look around I see so many websites which are simply not finished. The introduction of FrontPage, Expressions Web and various automatic template sites has given people the opportunity to create a website without any prior HTML design knowledge. The trouble is that some of the most important features of a site are not readily visible from the desktop or web browser screen. Some of the most important features that bring good Search Engine Placement are not in place because the person didn’t have the inside on what they were or how to put them in. Therefore what seems to be a good looking site is simply not finished. And if your business is dependent on this site than your business might be ailing. It isn’t really finished until it is finished…..professionally.

I saw the website of a friend the other day. This person is a friend and a successful person in her field. Her website was done by a service which specializes in companies which do the same things she does. It was odd to me that the site did not look good in the Firefox browser. In fact, some of the containers or divs were extending out past the main container or wrapper. This was made painfully clear because the white color contrasted with the surrounding structure. This site looked good in Internet Explorer. This is bad. This site design firm had designed this website by checking it in Microsoft Internet Explorer only. But the fact is that the biggest share of the market right now is had by people using Firefox, Chrome and Safari. That means that many people will see this site and think that it is junk, which it is. Business owners beware. The website may be your first impression for many people. People should hire a designer who is careful enough to check his/her work in a number of browsers.
